In setting the Gadget properties:
The "default forum" setting is the unique part of your Group's URL... e.g. in http://groups.google.com/a/myschool.org/group/mygroup you would use "mygroup"
The "domain containing the content..." is asking for your Google Apps for EDU domain, if you have one, plain URL format "myschool.org." If it's just a regular Google Group hosted at groups.google.com, I believe you would leave this blank.

Solution
Embed a Google Gadget by URL, using http://www.gstatic.com/sites-gadgets/forum/forum_content.xml Plug in your domain and your group name and voila! A running discussion embedded in your Google Site!
