Notes

It turns out that the .swf file Jing Free Version creates is not directly convertible to video for upload on YouPD.com (or any other video hosting platform other than screencast.com).    To work around this issue, download a converter like http://www.moyeasoft.com/swf-converter/swf-to-avi.html and convert your swf to mp4 before uploading.  Use the trial version of MoyaSoft and it will leave a watermark on top of your video.  For $15/yr you can also join Jing Pro and save your file in the highly cross-compatible MPEG-4 format before uploading.

If you'd rather evaluate a fully-functional screencasting tool, use Camtasia's 30-day free trial version.  Available here http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/

Push my thinking

What are some ways that screencasting could be used to transform teaching and learning, both for education professionals and for our students?

Cheap and Easy Screencasting with Jing

Problem of practice

How do you use Jing to capture video of a screen presentation?

Solution

Screencasting is a fantastic way to flip direct instruction portion of teaching into the online space, giving students more control over the pace and number of repetitions of a teacher's lesson, and freeing classtime for more interactive methods.

This is just a simple tutorial video I ripped off and shortened from the software that comes with a Wacom Bamboo Pen. The tutorial was entirely created by Wacom and I'm just making it available in case you need a dive into how the device works.

I create presentations in power point and/or place learning activities in presentations and I use a screen capture tool (jing/snagit) to record my voice over the slide shows. I upload to vimeo, then copy and paste the embed code into iLearn platform
